The Pura Principle

Overall, I thought that it was an interesting read. It was a short story based on a family who's father was gone and out of two sons, the older one was diagnosed with leukemia. It opens up by describing the hardships thee family already goes through and then how it changes as the son is taken out of chemo therapy. The main point of the story was about how the son had met a woman who didn't have any papers and how a relationship formed that was extremely harmful to the whole family. The couple ended up having a baby but had to continuously steal money from the mother because they had no jobs. Although they split up, the relationship costed everlasting damage on the entire family. The genre kept it interesting in that they were able to share an entire story in only a few pages. Also, the bits of Spanish and dialogue throughout the story really helped to connect you to the situation that was at hand.

  1. Hey Adil,

I read this short story, also, and I think interesting is a pretty good word for this story. I was intrigued by the reading but had trouble understanding it. Did you have any trouble?

It sounds like you saw the focus on family that I did. I think the absence of a father figure is an important part of the story that you touched on. Also, I agree that the mix of Spanish and English dialogue really added to the story.

  2. I didn't read this story, but it's interesting how you mentioned that a harmful relationship can expand and hurt a whole group of people. It's quite sad how easily we can hurt the people that love us the most.

I think I need to read the whole story to understand everyone's posts...

  3. Hi Adil!
I like how you pinpointed the matin-point of this short story. I on the other hand was kind of lost trying to grasp what exactly the author wanted to reveal.
Sidenote: Rafa had a kid with Pura??! Oh woah, I thought it was just Pura's child.
Agree with you on the spanich dialouge. Definitely had a different 'feel'.
